A keygen is a small piece of code that unlocks software or other digital content, typically for use on an end-user's machine. A key generator may be made by the developer of the item, but may also be created by third-party suppliers. The term is derived from "key", as in unlocking a door or file encrypting tool. Legalities are often unclear because corresponding license agreements vary and may not cover all forms of use that could arguably be considered copyright infringement, such as installing software on more than one computer or to create new license keys for redistribution. A keygen is essentially a tool that allows the creation of a unique serial number or "activation code" for a piece of software. These are commonly but inaccurately called cracks, which are utilities used to circumvent various copy-protection or licensing mechanisms. They may be intended for legitimate use by developers who want to ensure that updates are applied only on copies of the software where they are intended, not on every install; these copies normally include some kind of hardware identification in the serial number, checksum or key. A crack is most often created by hackers to bypass access controls in order to gain unauthorized access to protected software programs. Keygen is a recent addition to the tool vocabulary of hacker culture, and its origins are disputed. One claim is that the term originated in "The Legion of Doom Hacker's Dictionary" with an entry entitled "Key Generator". This key generator, according to the text, was a device for generating large numbers of valid keys for software and hardware which required them, and may have been inspired by the U.S. military requirement for a device which could generate large numbers of Permutation-Indistinguishable (PID) codewords or other keys; such devices were not ready in time for use in Vietnam. A more likely origin of the term, however, is from the practice of identifying a particular piece of hardware by means of a keyed hash of its contents. A key generator is a program which takes as input the hash of a piece of data and produces as output a series of numbers which can be used as valid serial numbers for software protected with dongles. As with most hacker terminology, this usage has spread beyond hacker culture over time, and over time has been generalized from physical keys to include digital keys as well. In 2015 some anti-linux malware also masquerades as a keygen application for generating serial numbers for various software programs including photoshop. The term "keyer" is used in the railfan community to describe a person who removes a rail car from service or blocks a track to prevent a train's passage. In the hacker subculture, keygenerator may also refer to a key generator that can be used to generate key values for malware.
